Tournament News

Congratulations!

Since my last blog post, Frank Love students have attended 3 different tournaments.  11 students attended the St. Thomas Moore tournament on January 12.  Vanessa, Cole and Cody received awards for competing in the their first ever tournament.  Dylan and Liam R. and Liam S. all won at least 3 games and qualified for the state tournament in April.  Kenney and Henry also won at least 3 games and received trophies.  I'm sorry that I don't have any pictures from this tournament.  If someone would like to email me some, I'd be happy to post them here.  During the award ceremony, the host of the tournament recognized Liam R. as a player deserving of the good sportsmanship award for the way he handled a dispute during one of his games.  The host also commented that Frank Love kids were well behaved and paid attention during announcements.  It was nice to be recognized and overall, it was a great day.  We are so proud of our team!  Congratulations to all of our players.

From Biju:
"Rohan Skariah (6th Grade)  and Roshan (3rd grade) attended  Chess4Life January 2013 State Qualifier at the chess4life center on January 19th 2013.  Both played in K-6 Open section and came second and third respectively. Both won 4 games each out of the total 5 games and qualified for the states."  Congratulations to them!

On January 21st, 8 students attended the WA Junior Open in Bellevue.  Andy received an award for competing in his first ever tournament.  Curtis won 11th place in his division with 3 points and qualified for state (again!).  Cameron won 9th place with 3.5 points and qualified for state!  Liam won 7th place (tied for second!) with 4 points and qualified for state (again!).  Henry had 2.5 points.  JazMinh, Ethan, Andy and Kenney each had 2 points.  As a team, together they beat out 50 other schools and earned a 4th place  team trophy (tied for 3rd!)!  This tournament also awarded "upset medals."  These medals were awarded to players who beat someone with a rating higher than their own.  For each round, the student who beat someone with the greatest difference in rating points earned the upset medal.  3 students, Ethan, Liam and Curtis won upset medals.  Congratulations!

When we arrived at the WA Junior Open tournament around 8am, there was a table assigned to "Frank Lowe" school.  Clearly our school was not known as a contender among this crowd.  But after calling out "Frank Love" for winning 3 upset medals, 3 individual trophies and a team trophy, they'll probably get it right next time.

New Year News

Happy New Year!

Frank Love Chess Club is proud to announce that we have the first team trophy for the 2013 season already in the trophy case in the school  library.  On December 15th, Cooper, Curtis, Drew, Henry and Kenney attended a tournament in Bellevue and won the second place team trophy.  Henry had 3 points.  He won 3rd place in his division and qualified for the state tournament in April.  Curtis also earned 3 points.  Although he did not win a placement trophy for his division, Curtis did qualify for the state tournament too.  Congrations to all of our players!

The next tournament that we already have Frank Love students signed up to attend will be on January 12th at St. Thomas Moore in Lynnwood.  You can sign up at www.chess4life.com .  Grades 1-3 should sign up for the U900 section.  Grades 4-6 should sign up for U1000 section.  Cedar Park Christian in Bothell will be hosting their annual tournament on March 23rd.  So mark your calendars!

For the past 3 weeks we have been hosting our own in-house tournament at chess club.  We keep track of who wins and loses each game in the tournament.  Then we create pairings for the following week based on the results.  When someone is absent, then someone else doesn't have a partner and we have to pair up those players that are often not at the same level.  When we know that someone will be absent we can avoid these issues.  Please let us know if your child will be absent.  We use the results of our in-house tournament to determine which students could use some more help and which could use more of a challenge.  So we hope to have all 77 students there!

At the last meeting, we handed out the new chess club T-shirts.  If your student was absent, we will bring them to the meeting on January 12th.  Please remember, there is no meeting on January 3rd.
